COCA - Memory Upgrade

This coming Thursday I'll be part of a show curated by artist Juan Alonso, for COCA [Center On Contemporary Art] upcoming Annual - Memory Upgrade.

Here is the press release statement on the upcoming show...

Memory Upgrade
From December 2, 2010 - January 1, 2011, CoCA Pioneer Square will present Memory Upgrade, a juried exhibition featuring work from 16 emerging as well as established artists in a wide variety of visual media, including 2d, 3d, and video.

This show explores the ways in which artists have responded to the global financial crisis by changing various aspects of their work. Considered collectively, these artists hint at the heightened importance of memory, history, and the role of the artist to affect social change.

Circa / Bric Jaz

Four new works were sent to Circa Gallery in Minneapolis and here is one of them, a piece titled Bric Jaz. I've been revisiting some of my older styles of work, which are mostly black and white, as you probably have seen from the new Target motif works of late. This work, and the three others I sent recently to Circa are part of a re-investigation of basic minimal designs that seem bountiful once again. If you happen to be in the Minneapolis area, you should take a moment and step into the gallery, it is a wonderful space, great people, and works from artists from all over the US...

Studio Alfred Harris

I find it so energizing to see how another artist, and especially one you really identify with, works. I had some new paintings that I showed at Woodside Braseth Gallery on Thursday night and my friend and fellow artist, Alfred Harris, came by and took a look, and then after the festivities, invited a few of us over to hang out. His way of working is something I completely understand, lots of little things contributing then later to bigger things. Materials like paper, all types, wood surfaces, again, all types, and finishes that shine. It recharged me to see it all. Thank you Alfred for the post opening enjoyment!

Channel 21

In the last few days I've had filming going on in my studio for an upcoming episode of Artzone which is a local television show focused on the visual arts here in the Seattle region. I enjoy having to focus on what the work is about, where I'm seeing the work both coming and going. One more day of shooting to do and I'll keep you all posted on when the show airs.

on the side

I recently got a new camera, an Olympus E-PL1 Camera. I have needed to upgrade for quite sometime, just to document my artwork with better results. The camera was the perfect fit for me, classic looking, and multiple lens options. One of the features of the camera is a tilt shift focus which turns the world outside into what appears to be a toy model. I've always been curious of this since I had seen the work of Miklos Gaal. It's really become an inspired option for me, and here are a few of my personal favorites that I have taken in the last few weeks.

I'm obsessed right now with a loose sense of line. I've been taking images that I currently work on in ink, from a sketchbook I keep, well one of several, and then run them through the digital hurdles and return to projection onto larger canvas's. It really is feeling right and boundless...

[Sketckbook continues...here]

The only thing slowing me right now is a bad cold, but my head keeps humming with ideas...

Fire Walk With Me

I've gotten to a place lately with the work that feels both attuned and loose. Not that those paths need to be divergent, but within my work for the last few years it's been difficult for me to get them to dance with one another. I've been focusing on being loose with some sketchbook activities to start each day here in the studio, and as simple as that has been, like stretching before exercising, I'd forgotten to do that in the last few years as well. The net result is that I'm trusting my hand, and arms more. I found that with as much as I will analyze and plot, that the simple act of knowledge bound in movement can give you a satisfying result had been that reach that I could not seem to make. The work above, is, for me, the realization of both an actualization of thought merged with being open, loose and in tune with ones body in context to your work. Perhaps a bit modernist in approach, but relevant to me making a good song in the guise of a painting...

Blues Inflicted Hope

Rode the bus into Seattle this evening and shared a wonderful conversation with Degenerate Art Ensemble's own Haruko Nishimura. She has been doing, what looks like, surprise Bhuto performances around Seattle. I for one would enjoy running accidentally into one of the performances, but I get the impression they are surprise events. Her blog shows some of the wonderful images she has been creating with a photographer here...
We talked about blog traffic, how to generate it and create mass, it was a nice reminder that I've lagged on posting thoughts, and encounters. They are important, and I've been off my game a bit. It's nice to be reminded of that, so thank you for the conversation Haruko!
Monday I ran into art dealer Greg Kucera at La Carta De Ozxaca here in Ballard and found out from him that tortilla shells, when warm, are even more enjoyable when you take butter and spread it inside the shell. Simple things do make for delicious...
